Improving epidemiological surveillance of transfusion
transmissible infections and hemovigilance analysis through
a comprehensive evaluation of routinely collected blood
donation data in Malawi
The study uses retrospective and prospective data
collection to create a comprehensive evaluation of
epidemiology, hemovigilance and conduct a spatial analysis
of routinely collected Malawi Blood Transfusion Service and
Ministry of Health data from blood collections systems to
identify optimal functioning districts, data quality
improvement and inform potential implementation science
studies.

Factors and Barriers Study
Exploring facilitators and barriers to blood collection
and repeat donations in high and low performing
districts/programs in Malawi
This qualitative study will use a cross-sectional,
qualitative, descriptive design to examine a range of factors
that influence blood donation and donor retention. The
study’s focus is to collect data to understand the
facilitators and barriers to first time donation and regular
donation in Malawi.
